Green Practices Becoming Standard

National Public Radio completed a two-part story on the green building revolution during its afternoon news program, “All Things Considered.” Citing McGraw-Hill Construction, they stated that green buildings account now for nearly 33 percent of new construction in the U.S. The first part of the story paid tribute to the U.S. Green Building Council and its LEED™ rating system in helping project owners and the public understand the benefits of sustainable practices.

The second part of the story highlighted some of the criticisms of the LEED system, especially in regards to energy savings. LEED has become the most recognized program and it is obvious that facility owners have heightened expectations about the benefits of the LEED program. Design professionals should work closely with their clients to set the appropriate client expectations about green features that are incorporated into the project.
