Types of Demands

Kidnap is the illegal taking and holding captive of a person by someone who then demands a ransom as a condition of their release.

Extortion is a threat made by persons who then demand a ransom as a condition of not carrying out such threats. Types of threats include:

  • Killing, injuring or abducting a person
  • Damaging or causing loss to property
  • Contaminating products or rendering them substandard
  • Divulging trade secrets
  • Introducing a computer virus designed to damage, destroy or corrupt computerized data

Detention is the holding of a person under duress for whatever reason and whether by authorities legally constituted in the place of custody or by others.

Hijack is the illegal holding of a person under duress while traveling in an aircraft, motor vehicle, train or water vessel or any other form of public or private transportation.

Virtually any company could be faced with these predicaments at any time, and while many of these are featured regularly in the press, others with varying degrees of significance remain out of the public eye.
