What is a "covered cause of loss?"
A covered cause of loss is one that is covered under your policy's terms. There are exclusions and limitations to property coverage, which include loss or damage due to:
- Earth movement, such as earthquake, sinkhole, mine subsidence, and volcanic eruption
- Government actions, including the seizure or destruction of property by order of governmental authority
- Nuclear hazard
- Power failure
- War and military action
- Water, such as flood or tidal waves. However, loss or damage resulting from water backing up from a sewer or drain is covered, but water emanating from a sump pump or other similar device designed to prevent overflow is not covered.
Therefore a "covered cause of loss" is any one that is not specifically excluded from your policy.
What about property loss or damage due to theft?
Loss due to theft is covered under a property policy - including any damage done by the thief in the act. For example, a thief rips open a desk drawer and steals a laptop. Your property policy will cover both the cost of the laptop and the replacement cost of the broken desk drawer.
What about damage due to a computer virus?
Loss or damage to property due to computer virus is not covered under the property policy, where a computer virus is a software introduced or implanted without authorization into the computer's hardware or software which causes the corruption, distortion, deletion, destruction, unauthorized copying or loss of functionality.
The policy also excludes the intentional and malicious use of a computer to obtain unauthorized access to information stored on the computer's hardware or software.
What is an inland marine policy and why is it important?
While property is away from your insured location, it is insured - but only up to a certain limit. An inland marine policy, despite what the name suggests, provides additional coverage for off-premises property.
Surveying equipment is often used away from the scheduled location. Because surveying equipment can be so expensive, replacement might exceed the policy limits. An inland marine policy would provide a higher limit of coverage for the replacement of this expensive equipment.
