AGC Funds an Effort to Streamline Project Communications

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), under a contract with and funded by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), has launched the AGCxml Project. Although AGC-led, this is an industry-wide initiative to enable the efficient and reliable exchange of electronic project information among all construction and design professionals.

Although building information modeling (BIM) is designed to facilitate the electronic exchange and the effective use of information about a building facility throughout its life cycle, AGC recognized a related need to streamline the exchange of the other transactional information that is typically exchanged during the design and construction process. Much of this information now is exchanged in hard-copy documents. Included are paper documents such as client-contractor agreements, schedules of values, requests for information (RFIs), requests for proposals (RFPs), architect/engineer supplemental instructions, change orders, change directives, submittals, applications for payment, and addenda.

The AGCxml project will result in a set of extensible markup language (XML) schemas that will enable the reliable exchange of project information among dissimilar or proprietary software applications. The project will be coordinated with other data format standards development efforts worldwide to coordinate the compatibility of AGCxml data with those efforts.

To enable the AGCxml project to serve the needs of the industry, NIBS and AGC are empanelling a Review and Validation Committee (RVC) of industry professionals to guide the project. Design and construction professionals in all functional position descriptions are needed to review and validate the development work of the NIBS technical team. Anyone interested in serving on the RVC as a volunteer can obtain more information from Michael Tardif, NIBS information technology project manager, at mtardif@nibs.org.
