In many regions of the United States, an enormous number of construction laborers speak Spanish. Whether for the general communications that come with managing individuals and small groups or for conveying specific instructions to specialty craft workers, effective communication increasingly depends on bridging the language gap.
A new dictionary will be very useful for any English-speakers communicating with Spanish-speakers. Means Spanish/English Construction Dictionary, published earlier this year by RS Means and the International Code Council, is an expanded second edition featuring thousands of common words and useful phrases for the construction industry with easy-to-follow pronunciations. Over 800 new terms, phrases, and illustrations have been added. This expanded second edition covers basic construction terminology, defining every term normally used. It also provides general terms used in everyday conversation including colors, descriptions of weather, directions, and basic tables of measurement.
Information about tools and trade-specific language (organized by topics such as grading, structures, concrete, and carpentry) includes an array of construction details labeled in both English and Spanish. Even safety and emergency issues are covered.
